In this episode of the Couch to Creator Podcast, we're tackling "beastification," which may sound odd, but it's really about retention hacking, a concept linked to YouTuber MrBeast. But don't be fooled, it's not solely about him. We're delving into what retention hacking truly entails and why moving away from it might not be feasible.

Retention hacking has been the go-to for achieving massive numbers and virality on YouTube and social media. But with talks of a new generation seeking more authentic content, some are advocating for longer, slower-paced videos with minimal editing.

People often misunderstand retention hacking, viewing it as merely an editing style, when in reality, it's about scientifically manipulating attention spans. It's become ingrained in content creation and won't disappear without a more effective alternative. Even traditional news outlets employ clickbait tactics, showcasing the lasting impact of this approach. Sensationalism in content creation has been evolving since around 2012, with the OG’s such as PewDiePie and Logan Paul marked by extravagant stunts and outrageous behavior that captivate audiences.

However creators adopting the ‘new wave’ editing style, like Ryan Ng, are garnering significantly higher engagement rates than traditional retention hacking channels like MrBeast.

Being passive in modern life, engulfed by phones, content, internet, food etc is like falling into a black hole of absorption. We're constantly bombarded with stimuli, akin to indulging in every aspect of life. However, just as some choose conscious eating or exercise, there's a growing community seeking to avoid such retention hacking in their media consumption.

While there's a shift towards more wholesome content, retention hacking remains a powerful tool for viral videos. It's not just a trend but a fundamental aspect of psychology and engaging content creation. Ethical considerations arise when emotions are exploited for views, blurring the line between engagement and manipulation.

This phenomenon extends beyond social media to streaming services like Netflix, where quantity often outweighs quality in a bid to retain subscribers. However we contemplate how this translates to cinema. Films like "Oppenheimer" favours a slower pace that challenges mainstream trends. Despite the dominance of rapid editing in modern media, scientific studies reveal a shift towards shorter shot lengths in commercial films, indicating a broader impact on cinematic storytelling.

As society grapples with the implications of addictive content consumption, education and dialogue become essential tools in fostering a more mindful approach. It's crucial to recognize that retention hacking exists on a spectrum, with harmless techniques coexisting alongside more manipulative tactics.

On the other hand, Beast Philanthropy YouTube channel, wield retention hacking for positive impact. Creators must balance creativity with viewership demands. Making content that aligns with personal values ensures fulfilment, even amid trends favouring rapid engagement.
