Tilta Matte Box Mini VS Tilta Mirage - $79 vs $599

In this YouTube video, we will be exploring the differences between the Tilter Mini and Tilter Mirage matte boxes, two popular options for filmmakers. Firstly, why you should invest in a Matte Box is very simple maths. Apart from the actual filmmaking benefits of using this camera tool, you can charge more money for your work. It makes you look more professional in front of a client, it gives you the confidence to back yourself and your prices. So which affordable or less affordable matte box should you invest in?

The Tilter Mini is a small and compact matte box, making it highly portable and convenient to use. It offers basic features such as a French flag, a quick locking system, and reductions for lenses with different diameters. You can easily attach one filter, and if you have super slim filters, you might even be able to fit two, although it can be a bit tight. The Mini's lightweight design is a big advantage, as it allows you to easily rig it on various setups, whether it's for a top headshot or on a car. Additionally, its small size means that you won't experience much air pressure when using it on a gimbal or during fast-paced shots.

However, there are a few downsides to consider. The locking mechanism for the filters is not very secure, and the plastic material used for the matte box doesn't provide a rubberized grip, which can make some users feel a bit uneasy. The mounting options for the rods are also not very flexible, which can pose a problem if your camera sits too low on the rods. You may need to use the reductions on the friction mount instead. Despite these drawbacks, the Tilter Mini is an affordable option that offers the basic advantages of a matte box, and according to research, having one can potentially allow you to charge 10 to 20 percent more for your filmmaking work (that isn’t real maths, don’t quote us).

Next we move on to the Tilter Mirage. This matte box is larger and more expandable than the Mini, thanks to its modular design. It offers various attachments and filter trays, allowing you to customize your setup according to your needs. One notable feature of the Mirage is that the reductions are threaded on both sides, giving you more flexibility in setting up your filters. This means that you can use circular filters you already own and mount them as you would on a regular lens. The Mirage also supports multiple trays, which enables you to pre-stack filter combinations, making it quick and easy to switch between different filters on set.

One of the standout features of the Mirage is its motorized wireless variable ND. This feature is a game-changer, as it allows you to adjust the variable ND wirelessly. This can be incredibly useful for quick shots, especially when using a gimbal or in remote setups. The Mirage is also designed with vents that reduce air pressure when in motion, making it a great choice for filmmakers who frequently work on moving shots.

However, there are a few drawbacks to consider. The Mirage is more expensive than the Mini and may require additional purchases, such as filter trays, to fully utilize its capabilities. The motorized variable ND, while innovative, may not provide the same optical quality as fixed ND filters, and some users have reported a noticeable color cast. It's important to note that the Mirage is more suited for run-and-gun and creative shots rather than high-budget productions. Additionally, due to its larger size and weight, you may need a counterweight to properly balance it on certain gimbals or rigs.

To summarise, the Tilter Mini is a great option for run-and-gun filmmakers who want a compact and affordable matte box that still offers the basic advantages of the product. On the other hand, the Tilter Mirage is a more professional and expandable option, perfect for filmmakers who want to take their work to the next level and have specific needs such as motorised wireless variable ND and pre-stacked filter combinations. Whichever option you choose, remember to start charging more for your work.
